Research Engineer

Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR) currently has a job opening for a Research Engineer in Berkeley, CA. Duties include: Developing theory and applications to improve collective decision-making and deliberation in the context of emerging advanced technology (e.g. artificial intelligence). Communicating results with collaborators and the broader research community within and outside the organization. Designing, implementing and maintaining software products to translate novel research ideas into usable applications.

Running experiments and writing computer-verifiable proofs to establish properties of collective decision and deliberation mechanisms. Staying up-to-date with developments in the field, such as mechanism design for combined decision-making and shared governance of resources relevant to advanced technology (e.g. artificial intelligence). Prioritizing work based on merit of applications to combined decision-making, particularly as it relates to the development of and risks from advanced technology. Assisting in hiring, particularly in the evaluation of technical ability.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in STEM field such as Computer Science, Math, or Physics, or, other field related to AI alignment research, and 4 years of experience in a related field. Experience must include: 4 years of professional experience with strongly-typed programming (e.g. Haskell, OCaml, Agda, Idris); 2 years of experience researching formal models of decision and action, such as Game theory, Decision theory, or Reinforcement learning theory; 2 years of experience researching management of extinction risks from advanced technology -- this could include: (a) Modelling the trajectory of emerging technology, (b) Governance work producing policies intended to ameliorate risks, or (c) Technical work intended to ameliorate risks; and 1 year of professional experience with React-based frontend web development.

Compensation: Salary range from $150,000-$250,000/year + standard benefits.
